General Summary

This position is responsible, under the supervision of an RN, for any assigned medical-related procedure to be performed during the school day including providing services for acute student needs in the health room, medication administration, medication audits, tube feedings, blood glucose monitoring, catheterization, and other invasive health care procedures. Additional duties will include head lice screening, medical and vision screenings, following individual health plans, providing emergency and standard first aid, review of immunization records and health updates, and maintaining appropriate medical documentation and files.

 

Qualifications and requirements:

• Must hold a valid North Carolina license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
• At least 3 years of experience in a hospital or clinic is preferred.
• Current BLS certification.
• Must possess an understanding of children’s physical and emotional needs.
• Must be flexible and able to work as an interdisciplinary team member.
• Must have strong communication abilities in order to build effective relationships with students, families, and staff members. 
• Must be compassionate and caring.
• Must possess an awareness of the safety of others.
• Must be physically able to fulfill all performance requirements of the position (e.g., lifting).
• Must contribute to the elements of the nursing process.
• Must participate in focused student assessments.
• Must participate in teaching by providing information, guidance, and demonstrations to students, family members and staff.
• Must be able to prioritize and perform interventions, recognize responses to interventions, and modify interventions based on student changes.
• Work within LPN scope of practice.
